Is There A Proper Way To Display Books?

February 02, 20261 min read

Today we are asking if their is a best practice in terms of book display.

According to some websites:

The "right" way to display books balances preservation with aesthetics by storing them upright or in small, supported stacks, while organizing by color, size, or genre to reduce visual clutter.

Ok, so basically it is said to make sure they look visually appealing, while keeping like colors together and reducing as much clutter as possible. Now, how can we do that? Here are some tips you can try.

  • Optimal Care: Store books upright rather than at an angle to prevent warping. Very large books can be stored flat.

  • Visual Organization: Organize by color (rainbow or gradient), genre, or by covering them for a uniform look.

  • Space Saving: Use, floating shelves or, for a modern look, place books with the spines facing inward to create a neutral color palette.

What about things we shouldn't do. Here are some common mistakes to try and avoid.

  • Overcrowding: Leaving some breathing room on shelves looks more curated.

  • Improper Support: Books allowed to lean can become damaged or deformed.

  • Direct Sunlight: Avoid placing books in direct sunlight to prevent fading.

So, which ideas make sense to you and which seem a little unrealistic? Let us know in the comments and go read a book!
