Do You Remember: Little Golden Books?

November 24, 20251 min read

Today we're going back in time for a quick look at the series known as Little Golden Books..

Little Golden Books are a series of children's books launched in October 1942 with 12 titles priced at 25 cents each, making them a more affordable and accessible alternative to expensive hardcovers.

Their iconic gold spine, sturdy quality, and availability in mass-market retailers like grocery stores made them an instant success, with the first titles selling out immediately and a second print run ordered within months.

The series, which includes the best-selling children's book of all time, The Poky Little Puppy, has sold over two billion copies and continues to publish new books today.

The books were designed to be sold in drugstores, newsstands, and grocery stores, making them accessible to a wider audience than traditional bookshops.

Over two billion Little Golden Books have been sold, and more than 1,400 titles have been published since their 1942 debut. Topics range from classic fairy tales and nursery rhymes to modern stories featuring popular characters from Disney, Sesame Street, and more. The idea was conceived by George Dupplay, and the first books were a collaborative effort between Western Publishing and Simon & Schuster.
