Understanding Book Condition Guidelines

When purchasing a pre-loved book, knowing its condition is essential to ensure it meets your expectations. Below is a detailed guide to the terms we use to describe the state of our books, ranging from brand new to well-worn treasures.

New

The item is entirely new, never used, and without any marks, in perfect condition.

Fine/Like New (F)

The book might have been read, but it appears new with no flaws. There could be slight marks from handling.

Near Fine (NF)

It's clean without any flaws, though there might be subtle wear at the book's edges or dust jacket.

Very Good (VG)

Displays indications of use, potentially having minor imperfections such as a slightly damaged dust jacket, previous owner's writing, remainder marks, or minor instances of spotting or rubbing.

Good (G)

An average pre-owned book with all pages intact. It could exhibit any of the above-mentioned flaws to a higher degree, which might include underlining, library imprints, or pages coming loose.

Fair (FR)

Could be highly worn, stained, torn, or barely holding together.
